The Western Australian Practice Nurses Association was established to provide a forum for Western Australian nurses, who are employed in General Practices, Doctors' Surgeries and Clinics, offering them opportunities to meet, update their medical knowledge and nursing skills, and interact socially. It is a non-profit organisation, which is run by volunteers.

Presentations are given by Guest Speakers at the monthly educational meetings to which members are invited. In the past, these 30 to 45 minute presentations have covered topics such as immunisation and wound care updates, Naltrexone program, blood test result interpretation, Carelink/EPC, care plans and men's health.

To provide opportunities for professional development, the Association periodically runs more comprehensive seminars. A full day seminar, which includes an immunisation update in the morning is typically held in March and Saturday afternoon seminars are held in June/July and October. The cost for attendance at the two half-day seminars is currently a very modest $35 for members and $55 for non-members. Seminar topics in the past have included: legal issues, continence care, cardiac, respiratory and paediatric emergencies, mental health, diabetes, natal care and women's health, asthma, Parkinsons Disease, Asbestos Disease and Asbestos research.

CPD hours are earned for each educational meeting and seminar that is attended.


Membership of the Association is open to all nurses registered with The Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA), who are employed in doctors' surgeries (whether general practitioners, specialists, pathology practices or private outpatients clinics), or nurses and other persons with an interest in this area of nursing, including students of nursing, who may be invited to become members. Affiliate membership is now open to an individual, corporation or incorporated body interested in the work of the association. Affiliate members will not have voting rights.
